From the ancient capital of Anuradhapura and the Sigiriya rock fortress, through Kandy's Temple of the Tooth and the misty tea country of Nuwara Eliya, to a jeep safari in Yala National Park and three relaxed nights in Bentota — this is the complete island experience.
Itinerary
Day 1
Welcome at the airport and ~3-hour drive to Sigiriya. Hotel check-in and time to relax after the journey.
Day 2
Excursion to the ancient capital of Anuradhapura (UNESCO World Heritage): Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Thuparamaya, Isurumuniya Temple. Return to Sigiriya for the night.
Day 3
Sigiriya Rock Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage), Habarana Tropical Village tour with authentic cooking demonstration and bullock-cart ride, half-day jeep safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park.
Day 4
Drive to Kandy with stops at the Dambulla Cave Temple (UNESCO), the Aluvihare Rock Temple in Matale and the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy.
Day 5
Sembuwatta Lake, traditional wood-carving centre and gem museum, city viewpoint and local market. Evening cultural show featuring traditional Sri Lankan dance and music.
Day 6
Drive into the tea country (~2½ hrs). En route: Royal Botanical Garden in Peradeniya, Ramboda Falls, visit to a tea plantation and factory. Evening at Gregory Lake and Victoria Park.
Day 7
Nature trail in Horton Plains National Park, visit to Ambewela Farm and a strawberry farm. Evening pony / horse ride in the Race Course area.
Day 8
Drive to Yala via Ella (~4 hrs): Ravana Falls, Nine Arches Bridge, Ella Gap, Little Adam's Peak. Evening jeep safari in Yala National Park. Optional: scenic train journey Nuwara Eliya–Ella.
Day 9
Drive to the south coast (~3½ hrs). Optional: early-morning jeep safari in Yala. Visit Galle Dutch Fort (UNESCO World Heritage). Check-in at Bentota.
Day 10
Boat ride through the mangroves on the Balapitiya River, sea-turtle hatchery and farm in Kosgoda, Ambalangoda traditional mask factory and museum.
Day 11
Leisure on the beach and at the hotel. Optional: Lunuganga garden tour or water sports on the Bentota River (jet ski, wakeboard, banana ride, etc.).
Day 12
Drive to Colombo (~2 hrs). Sightseeing: Colombo National Museum, Dutch Hospital and Shopping Precinct, Independence Square, shopping malls.
Day 13
After breakfast, ~45-minute transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for your departure flight.
